Overview: The new Atrisco Heritage High School in Albuquerque was one of the largest secondary educational facilities ever constructed in New Mexico. The award of Phase II to DKG was qualification-based as well as cost-driven. The campus is located on Albuquerque’s West Mesa in an area of dramatic population expansion which had resulted in over-crowded public schools. An important design consideration was membrane solar reflectivity and the potential reflective glare to passing aircraft. A tan TPO membrane was selected by the District and the design professional to eliminate the risk of an overhead blinding glare.

Installation: The roofing was completed over an eight-month period. The roof assembly consisted of two layers of 2.5” isocyanurate insulation mechanically attached to a 22-gauge metal deck and an adhered, tan 60-mil TPO membrane and flashings. DKG fabricated and installed more than a mile of our ES-1 tested 24-gauge, pre-finished metal coping and 22-gauge “chair” (coping cap system) system. The base flashings are run over the entire inner surface of the parapet wall to the outer edge of the wood nailer encapsulating the wall against moisture intrusion. Chairs are installed every three feet, and ten-foot coping sections are snapped-on. Splice plates are used at the coping joints. There are no exposed fasteners and the coping is included in the 20-year leak-free warranty.
