Building Owner: New Mexico Highlands University
Architect: Studio Southwest
General Contractor: Franken Construction
Completed: 2013

Project Size: Approx. 70,000 sq. ft
Roofing Systems: 60 mil. TPO Repairs and Renovations

Overview: After the University changed general contractors, DKG was brought in to install all roofing and metal wall related work, and to bring all partially completed roof areas into a warrantable condition.

Installation: The project covered several challenging roofing and metal wall, fascia and soffit installations:

  • A 15,000 sq. ft. plaza deck with 3,500 sq. ft. of decorative walkway pavers was comprised of the following:
    • The 18,500 sq. ft. concrete surface was mopped with a thick layer (125 mil.) of hot-melt rubber and protected by a heavy asphaltic fiberglass base sheet and elastomeric base flashings.
    • A polyester fabric, drainage board and filter fabric was installed over the protected hot-melt rubber
    • A total of 8” of 60 PSI extruded polystyrene insulation was loose laid in the paver section and 8” of 25 PSI extruded polystyrene under the larger ballasted sections.
    • Surface leveling pedestals and architectural pavers were installed over the 60 PSI EPS insulation.
    • 1,200 lbs./100 sq. ft. of 1.5” smooth river rock was broadcast evenly over the 25 PSI EPS insulation area.
  • A section totaling 37,200 sq. ft. of previously installed 60 mil. TPO membrane required hundreds of repairs, new base flashings, miscellaneous flashings and accessories, counterflashings and a metal coping system.
  • The project specifications called out for custom pre-oxidized Corten steel wall panels, fascia, soffits and trim to give the building a rusted, aged, industrial appearance. DKG fabricated all of the Corten components in-shop, transported the metal to the jobsite and meticulously installed thousands of individual pieces to the satisfaction of the Owner, Architect and General Contractor.
  • The new main entry canopy was roofed with an insulated 60 mil. TPO membrane. The soffit was custom designed and installed by DKG.
